Evaluates penile prosthesis benefits in men with severe erectile dysfunction, suggesting improvements in quality of life.
Introduction Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition that significantly affects men’s physical, psychological, and social well-being. It leads to reduced self-confidence, emotional distress, strained partner relationships, and overall deterioration of quality of life. In Kyrgyzstan, as in many other regions, lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke, and trauma play a key role in the development of ED. Addressing this issue through surgical treatment options, particularly penile prosthesis implantation, provides not only restoration of erectile function but also psychosocial and lifestyle benefits for affected patients. Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of erectile dysfunction among men in Kyrgyzstan and to analyze the outcomes of penile prosthesis implantation in patients with severe ED, emphasizing improvements in sexual function, psychological well-being, partner communication, and overall lifestyle. Methods Between January 1, 2024, and July 31, 2024, a total of 600 male patients presented to DOC University Hospital, Bishkek, with symptoms of erectile dysfunction. All patients completed the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) questionnaire to assess erectile function. Additional diagnostic evaluations included hormonal profiling and radiological assessment when required. Patients with mild to moderate ED were managed medically, while 70 patients were diagnosed with severe erectile dysfunction requiring surgical intervention. Of these, 30 patients consented to penile prosthesis implantation, and 40 declined surgical treatment. During the screening and treatment process, all personal and clinical data were kept strictly confidential. Postoperative follow-up was conducted using an additional structured questionnaire evaluating sexual function, self-esteem, confidence, partner relationship, and overall quality of life. Results The majority of patients presented with lifestyle-related comorbidities, including smoking, alcohol abuse, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and hypertension. Among the 30 patients who underwent penile prosthesis implantation, there was a marked improvement in sexual satisfaction, erection maintenance, and psychological stability. Patients reported enhanced self-confidence, improved communication with partners, and a more active social life. Many expressed readiness to openly discuss sexual health with peers and partners, reflecting improved self-perception and emotional well-being. Furthermore, a significant number of patients stated that they would recommend this surgical treatment to others experiencing similar problems. These findings demonstrate that penile prosthesis implantation contributes not only to the restoration of sexual function but also to substantial psychosocial rehabilitation and enhancement of overall life satisfaction. Conclusions Penile prosthesis implantation is an effective, safe, and reliable surgical solution for men suffering from severe erectile dysfunction. Beyond functional recovery, the procedure significantly improves emotional health, partner intimacy, and quality of life, enabling patients to regain self-assurance and social confidence. Raising awareness and increasing accessibility to penile prosthesis surgery in Kyrgyzstan may have a profound positive impact on men’s sexual and psychosocial health, fostering a more open and supportive attitude toward sexual well-being in the community.
