Examines the role of sexual medicine in integrative health, suggesting new holistic healthcare strategies.
Introduction Integrative Health emphasizes a holistic approach beyond medical specialties. This aligns with traditional Chinese health concepts that prioritize Yin-Yang balance and Qi harmony. Sexual health is regarded as a mirror of overall vitality rather than an isolated function. Sexual Medicine, with its interdisciplinary nature, serves as a central bridge within Integrative Health. This article presents a Chinese perspective on how Sexual Medicine integrates diverse medical fields, including insights from traditional Chinese sexual cultivation arts. Objective This study aims to elucidate the role of Sexual Medicine as a key integrative platform within the Chinese Integrative Health model, demonstrating its capacity to connect clinical medicine, functional medicine (informed by TCM), mental health, and longevity medicine, while incorporating wisdom from traditional Chinese sexual practices. Methods A systematic conceptual analysis and literature review were conducted, synthesizing evidence from Chinese clinical studies, TCM classical texts, historical sexual cultivation manuscripts, and international publications (2010-2024), with focus on models and evidence illustrating Sexual Medicine's bridging function in the Chinese context. Results From a Chinese perspective, Sexual Medicine serves as a multifunctional bridge across four key domains: 1. Clinical Medicine: Sexual dysfunction serves as an early sentinel for systemic diseases. Erectile dysfunction predicts cardiovascular and metabolic risks, while TCM patterns like "Kidney Yang Deficiency" and "Blood Stasis" enable constitution-specific interventions. 2. Functional & TCM-informed Medicine: Sexual symptoms reflect systemic imbalances. TCM links dysfunction to Zang-Fu organ disorders, integrating functional medicine approaches with herbal therapy (e.g., Bushen formulas) and acupuncture. 3. Mental Health & Culturally-Informed Therapy: Sexual wellbeing connects to emotional and relational health. Practice integrates psychological counseling with culturally-sensitive approaches addressing social pressures and concepts like "heart-kidney non-interaction". 4. Longevity & Preventive Medicine: Sexual vitality preservation is fundamental to anti-aging strategies, closely linked to Jing (Essence). We have integrated traditional sexual cultivation techniques (Fangzhong Shu) with modern sexual medicine, employing breath-work, specific pelvic exercises, and energy circulation methods from ancient texts alongside tailored herbal regimens, Qigong, and Taijiquan to maintain both sexual function and overall healthspan. Conclusions Sexual Medicine represents a vital integrative nexus in Chinese Integrative Health, effectively bridging modern clinical practice with TCM wisdom, mind-body connections, and disease treatment with longevity promotion. The integration of traditional Chinese sexual cultivation arts with contemporary sexual medicine offers unique insights into preventive healthcare and vitality preservation. Formalizing this role is crucial for advancing person-centered, preventive, and culturally-attuned healthcare. Disclosure No
