Development of a comprehensive dataset to analyze sexual pain processing using eye tracking technology.
Introduction Despite the availability of several stimuli databases for sex research only a few standardised pictures explicitly represent penetration, and no dataset allow the extensive study of different penetration modalities. Moreover, there is currently no dataset specifically designed to investigate sexual processing within the context of chronic pain compatible with online eye-tracking methodologies. To address these gaps, we developed a novel dataset comprising three distinct subsets-sexual, pain-related, and neutral stimuli-designed to study sex-pain interactions while enabling compatibility with online eye-tracking technologies. Objective To provide a comprehensive stimuli dataset specifically developed to investigate the cognitive aspects of sexual pain using an online eye-tracking procedure. Methods 144 pictures regarding sexual, painful and neutral actions, were gathered using both an extensive online web search and an artificial intelligence tool for picture generation. Luminance, contrast, and colour nuances of pictures were matched with reference to the visual properties of sexual scenes. Importantly, the area of interest (AOI) of each picture – meaning a predefined region within the picture designate for eye tracking analysis, has been specifically distributed across four quadrants in a balanced manner in each category in accordance with the functioning of the WebGazer, a JavaScript algorithm developed to assess gaze online. Results A complete set of 144 pictures have been developed to study sex-pain interactions. The pictures are organised according to three categories of stimuli (sexual, pain-related and neutral) each composed of six sub-categories. The sexual set (48 pictures) collects vaginal penetration with penis (8), vaginal penetration with fingers (8), vaginal penetration with toy (8), external stimulation with penis (8), external stimulation with fingers (8), external stimulation with toy (8). The pain-related set (48) collets blades-related pain (8), burns-related pain (8), crush-related pain (8), distortion/impact-related pain (8), glass-related pain (8), needles-related pain (8). Finally, the neutral set (48) collects cooking activities (8), opening doors (8), playing cards/board games (8), pouring drink (8), social interactions (8), sports (8). Conclusions While validation on cisgender men and women of all sexual orientations is still underway considering valence, arousal, categorisation and sexual arousal, the proposed dataset represents a potential novel and structured resource specifically designed to assess visual processing of sexual and pain-related pictures with online eye-tracking methodologies.
