Abstract Numerous relationships have been proposed to calculate the sediment concentration profile in channels and rivers. One of these methods is the Rouse equation, which utilizes hydraulic principles to estimate sediment concentration. This study aims to enhance the accuracy of predicting the depth distribution of suspended sediment concentration. To achieve this objective, laboratory and field data were utilized to evaluate existing relationships for the depth distribution of suspended sediment concentration. Additionally, SPSS software was employed to establish relationships for the sediment and flow mixing ratio parameter β . By integrating both empirical data and statistical analysis, this research seeks to contribute to the development of a more precise relationship for predicting the depth distribution of suspended sediment concentration in water channels and rivers. The findings of the current study revealed that the parameter β is not influenced by the ratio of the particle's fall velocity to the flow's shear velocity (ω/u * ), indicating that there is no discernible relationship between these two parameters. The introduction of a novel relationship for the parameter β in this research signifies a substantial improvement in the precision of existing relationships for predicting the depth distribution of suspended sediment concentration.
