This contribution examines design strategies for modular additive manufacturing, indicating new possibilities in construction.
Additive manufacturing opens new possibilities in construction for materially informed, resource‐efficient and functionally hybridised building components. This contribution examines design strategies for modular additive manufacturing and shows how the focus shifts from product‐oriented to process‐oriented design. Based on experimental research and teaching projects, digital form‐finding, modelling, segmentation and fabrication processes are described as integral parts of architectural development. Particle‐bed‐based AMC processes demonstrate how differentiated internal structures and graded material densities can be integrated into modular component systems through the targeted control of particle deposition and binder or paste intrusion. The aim is to strengthen the interface between design, structural engineering, material technology and fabrication, and to understand additive processes not merely as manufacturing methods, but as design‐defining principles for future construction methods.
