Key result
Left atrial myxoma resection linked to paracentral acute middle maculopathy in a 77-year-old woman.
Why the study?
To describe a rare case of paracentral acute middle maculopathy occurring after median sternotomy for atrial myxoma.
Case Report (n=1)
This case highlights a previously undocumented association between left atrial myxoma resection and the development of paracentral acute middle maculopathy.
Alerts clinicians to possible PAMM after myxoma resection; leaves open causality and needs confirmation.
PURPOSE: To describe a rare case of paracentral acute middle maculopathy in the postprocedural period of median sternotomy for atrial myxoma. METHODS: History, systemic and ophthalmic evaluation, optical coherence tomography (OCT), and visual field testing. RESULTS: A 77-year-old female developed new-onset blurred vision ten days after surgical resection of a left atrial myxoma. Ophthalmic examination and OCT findings were consistent with paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM). CONCLUSION: PAMM is a rare retinal ischemic condition that may occur following systemic vascular insults. This case highlights a previously undocumented association between left atrial myxoma resection and the development of PAMM.

Ksiazek et al. (2026) conducted a case report in Paracentral acute middle maculopathy following atrial myxoma resection (n=1). Surgical resection of left atrial myxoma was evaluated on Development of paracentral acute middle maculopathy (PAMM). Surgical resection of a left atrial myxoma was associated with the development of paracentral acute middle maculopathy in a 77-year-old female.
