Key result
Sit-to-stand performance is strongly inversely linked to appendicular lean mass in older adults with T2D.
Why the study?
Type 2 diabetes is a risk factor for sarcopenia, but there is a paucity of data regarding the relationship between muscle strength and muscle mass indices.
Cross-Sectional (n=18)
Effect estimate: r=-0.54
p-value: p=0.0209
In older adults with T2D and overweight/obesity, upper-body strength correlates positively with imaging-derived muscle mass, whereas lower-body performance shows a negative association with DXA-derived appendicular lean mass.
Introduction and Objective: T2D is a risk factor for sarcopenia, characterized by low muscle strength and mass. There is a paucity of data regarding the relationship between these indices. Associations between muscle strength and muscle imaging indices in older adults with T2D were assessed. Methods: Adults (≥65 y) with T2D and overweight/obesity (n=18) completed muscle strength assessments (hand grip [HG], sit-to-stand [STS]) and muscle imaging using DXA (appendicular lean mass [ALM]) and MRI (thigh muscle volume [TMV]). Correlations between strength measures and imaging-derived muscle indices were examined using Pearson correlation coefficients. Results: Mean age, 72.0 y; 55.6% were female; mean HbA1c, 6.7%. HG strength was significantly positively correlated with ALM and TMV (Fig 1). A better score on the STS was associated with lower ALM (r=−0.54; p=0.0209). No significant association was observed between STS and TMV (r=−0.38; p=0.1174). Conclusion: In older adults with T2D and overweight/obesity, upper-body strength (HG) was positively associated with imaging-derived muscle indices. Lower-body performance (STS) showed a significant negative association with DXA-derived ALM but not with MRI-derived TMV. Disclosure T. Yahalom-Peri: None. A. Hornik: None. J.G. YAHALOM-PERI et al. (2026) conducted a cross-sectional in Type 2 Diabetes and overweight/obesity (n=18). Muscle strength (hand grip, sit-to-stand) was evaluated on Correlation between strength measures and imaging-derived muscle indices (ALM and TMV) (r=-0.54, p=0.0209). In older adults with T2D and overweight/obesity, lower-body performance (sit-to-stand) showed a significant negative association with DXA-derived appendicular lean mass (r=-0.54; p=0.0209).
