Qualitative implementation science explores strategies for integrating a DKA educational infographic in healthcare, enhancing education for individuals with T1D.
Introduction and Objective: Current DKA education tools are difficult to use and teach. Through our prior research, we created a simple DKA core educational infographic (Figure 1) with 52 patient partners, caregivers and healthcare professionals (HP). We now aimed to explore practical strategies to support its broad implementation. Methods: We used qualitative implementation science methods centered on virtual focus groups and semi-structured interviews with individuals living with T1D and HP, guided by user-centered design principles. Transcripts were analyzed using inductive thematic content analysis to identify key themes. Results: The study recruited a total of 16 participants (8 females, 8 males, mean age 41) across 12 data-collection sessions. The results identified key preferences for implementation of the infographic: A. Waiting room placement in emergency departments, endocrinology clinics, family medicine clinics and pharmacies; B. Digital access such as QR codes, websites or mobile applications; C. During diabetes visits facilitated by a conversation guide. Conclusion: The study offers insights into implementing an effective educational tool across diverse clinical settings. We recognize that implementation is an iterative, context-dependent process, therefore we present this core infographic as a flexible foundation adaptable to current clinical practice.
