Review highlights effects of antifreeze additives on hot-mix asphalt performance in varying temperatures and moisture conditions.
In recent decades, antifreeze additives have been used in hot-mix asphalt. The present study is a review of the effects of antifreeze additives on the low-temperature performance, high-temperature performance, and moisture resistance of hot-mix asphalt. Accordingly, this study focused on articles published in recent decades, especially studies conducted between 2011 and 2022. A review of previous research shows that hot-mix asphalt containing finer antifreeze additives performs better at low temperatures and against moisture, and hot-mix asphalt containing coarser antifreeze additives performs better at high temperatures. Modifiers that increase the elasticity of the asphalt mix, as well as the asphalt mix design method, play an effective role in improving the performance of hot-mix asphalt. Unfortunately, there has been no single test to investigate antifreeze asphalt mixtures. This may cause difficulties for researchers in their research and investigation. Also, most studies are limited to laboratory conditions, and there is little field research. Therefore, it is better to conduct further research under real-world and long-term conditions to evaluate the low-temperature, high-temperature, and moisture resistance performance of hot-mix asphalt containing antifreeze additives.
