1538-P: Diet Quality in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes: Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) Compared with Injections and Nonautomated Pumps

Introduction and Objective: Research shows that AID can reduce anxiety around eating, potentially prompting increased consumption of discretionary foods, but the impact on diet quality is yet to be studied. This analysis examined the alignment of the dietary intake of adults with T1D with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA), comparing AID users with non-AID users (injections and non-AID pumps). Methods: Remote food photography data from the T1D Exercise Initiative were used to cross-sectionally analyze the association of AID use with diet quality (Healthy Eating Index (HEI-2020)). Generalized linear regression and Tobit models adjusted for age and sex were used. Results: Among the 394 participants, the average age was 32 25, 45, 73% were female, and 51% used AID. The total HEI-2020 score was not different between AID (59.6 IQR: 52.2, 66.6) and non-AID users (60.9 52.1, 67.7, p = 0.489). Results from the adjusted models show lower alignment with the DGA for total protein (-0.65 -1.23, -0.07), saturated fats (-0.63 -1.25, -0.01) and fatty acid-ratio (-0.69 -1.33, -0.06) and higher alignment with the DGA for total dairy consumption (0.79 0.24, 1.35) among AID users compared to non-AID users. Conclusion: Results show low overall DGA alignment among adults with T1D, with specific differences between AID and non-AID users in protein foods and fatty acid intake. These findings highlight the ongoing need for nutrition therapy in T1D, even with increased AID adoption. Disclosure M.
