Investigates the Knoevenagel condensation outcome in ionic liquids, suggesting a green alternative without solvents.
The Knoevenagel condensation of aldehydes with active methylene compounds in a mild basic choline chloride–urea ionic liquid to afford alkenes is reported. The proposed green protocol does not require a catalyst or organic solvent. A limitation of this protocol is that ketones failed to undergo the Knoevenagel condensation with active methylene compounds under these conditions.
