Evaluates mechanical properties of spin-cast Alloy 617 in metal fabrication, indicating its viability for applications.
An effort was made to replace transition inlet rings made of either investment cast Hastelloy Alloy X or wrought Alloy 617 by spin-cast Alloy 617, for cost reasons and better weldability. Alloy 617 is a dedicated wrought alloy and normally not used in cast form. Tensile properties of a spin-cast cylinder met with pertinent specifications, except for ultimate tensile strength (UTS) at room temperature (RT), and stress rupture life. Ductility and toughness were excellent. The chemical composition was found to be within specified limits. Short-time stress rupture life did not meet with specified requirements (required 23 hours, actual life was 20.7 hours).
