Workshop synthesizes challenges and best practices for passive data collection in transport planning, suggesting improvements.
Information and communication technologies (ICT) have transformed the transport economy by enabling the real-time collection of behavioral information through passive data collection methods. In transportation planning, it is essential to examine the potential and challenges of passive data sources, such as mobile phone data, vehicle data, smart cards, social media and video surveillance. Based on expert discussions within the “ Emerging Passive Data Collection Technologies ” workshop of the 13 th International Conference on Transport Survey Methods, this article analyses the technical, methodological and societal challenges posed by using passive data, while identifying the best practices for its collection, processing and application in order to understand mobility behavior, monitor the state of the road infrastructures and predict transport demand. It addresses crucial issues such as privacy concerns, data standardization, data quality, energy consumption and the need for public–private partnerships.
