This article surveys the first chapter of the Vibhaṅga Mūlaṭīkā, an Abhidhamma sub-commentary attributed to Ānanda (ca. sixth century) and in the line of the Vibhaṅga. The article presents a detailed analysis of the aggregates ( khandha-vibhaṅga ), and an explanation of the khandha-vibhaṅga s of the root Vibhaṅga and its commentary, the Sammohavinodanī, attributed to Buddhaghosa. A survey of the Vibhaṅga Mūlaṭīkā outlines the characteristics of its relationship with the whole commentarial tradition, and more specifically with Ānanda's antecedent, Buddhaghosa, and Ānanda's famous disciple, the commentator Dhammapāla.
