Shows flare continuum impacts emission lines in young K dwarf LQ Hya, suggesting new methods for analysis.
We monitored LQ Hya for 52 nights using Pucheros+ echelle spectrograph and simultaneous g' band photometry on the ESO 1.52m telescope at La Silla. We identified over 30 flares on Hα and 3 flares in the photometry. Using the strongest flare in the sample, we discern lines showing excess emission while flaring. However, part of this emission is caused by the flare continuum contribution and not intrinsic line variability. This is a consequence of flux-normalised nature of the spectra diluting line depths by flare continuum. We were able to correct for this effect with photometry-based relative flux calibration. We propose the dilution as measured by the ccf-profile to be an alternative means of obtaining the flare continuum contribution when photometry is not available. Moreover, per-order profiles and quiet star flux-calibrated spectra provide a spectral energy distribution for the flare continuum.
