Validation study assesses air dispersion models for LNG emissions in area sources, indicating limitations in dataset adequacy.
In the study by Tagliaferri et al. (2025) two air dispersion models for passive gases (CALPUFF and LAPMOD) have been validated against the release from area sources. We acknowledge the importance to validate those models – and others – with area sources, however, we believe that the datasets used by Tagliaferri et al. (2025) are not adequate because they describe the release of LNG (liquefied natural gas) on water. Indeed, due to its cryogenic boiling point, LNG behaves as a denser-than-air gas, and its fate cannot be correctly described by models developed for simulating the dispersion of passive gases.
