Scholars discuss evolving museum roles to enhance community engagement and development.
The theme of International Museum Day 2025 is “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities”, several university scholars and museum experts to discuss the concepts and practices of this theme in writing. The discourse covers five key dimensions: First, analyzes the development of global museums in the rapidly changing communities, pointing out that the development of global museums presents a trend of diversification and differentiation, and that museums adhere to cultural inheritance in innovation as the cornerstone of their sustainable development. Second, the contemporary mission of museums, which is to serve the comprehensive development of people, assist in the healthy development of regions, and become a driver and stabilizer of social development. Third, explores the future development of museums from the perspective of residence, and proposes that museums urgently need to break away from traditional linear narrative thinking and instead use the perspective of residence to re-understand individuals, objects, local experiences, and global perspectives, build beautiful homes, and fulfill their social responsibility to enhance understanding and bridge differences. Fourth, discusses the construction of the museum's “Grand Exhibition” concept system from three levels: large space, long time span, and deep dimension. It proposes to expand the physical and virtual boundaries of exhibitions, break the traditional narrative mode of time, consolidate academic foundation, and deepen emotional resonance. Fifth, outlines the development stages of digital technology in museum accessibility services and points out that fully utilizing digital technology, optimizing audience services in all aspects, and enhancing the visiting experience of different groups are important responsibilities for museums to cope with rapid social changes in the future.
