This article develops an analytical tool to address issues in sex/gender binary understanding in Finland, indicating new feminist legal insights.
The aim of this article is first to map how Nordic feminism, especially its Finnish strand of Feminist legal philosophy, currently engages with the binary understanding of sex/gender, and how this discussion could be interpreted from a Feminist New Materialist perspective. The final aim is to develop an analytical tool that would help to exemplify contemporary issues attached to binary thinking on sex/ gender. These aims are approached trough a new materialist methodology called diffractive reading of previous work conducted on the topic. Finnish legal philosophy seems not to take ontologically rigid binary sex/gender categories for granted and this was visible in the analysis conducted on the chosen material concerning Finnish Personal Identification code law renewal. The article introduces the reader to BinaryTech, an analytical tool I have developed inspired by my encounters with new materialisms. BinaryTech can be used in analysis of sex/gender's material-discursive features. Nordic feminisms would benefit from engagement with feminist new materialism for maintaining its future relevance also internationally.
