Recognizing the importance of fluorine and deuterium in medicinal chemistry but hampered by the recent controversy surrounding PFAS, we chose to develop new reagents that allow the insertion of non-PFAS fluorinated motifs, such as the CD 2 F and CF 2 D fragments. Based on our previous work on the use of cyclic sulfoximines as reagents, the synthesis and measurement of p K a values of these new sulfoximines were compared to those of their so-called “open” analogues. This work enabled us to access the deuterated versions of these compounds. We then continued the comparison between these cyclic and open fragments by discussing their use as reagents and radical sources.
