Scoping review examines factors affecting data quality in electronic health records, suggesting areas for improvement within hospitals.
This paper presents findings from a scoping reviewexamining factors influencing data quality in electronichealth records (EHR) documentation among healthprofessionals in hospital settings. The review followsJoanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and PRISMA-ScRguidelines.The analysis shows that data quality is widely discussedbut only rarely defined explic-itly. Instead, studies oftenrefer to data quality through dimensions such ascompleteness, accuracy, consistency, accessibility, currency, and contextual validity. The review identifiesfive themes of promoting and hindering factors for dataquality: documentation practices and be-haviour; EHR systemdesign and functionality; workflow and work environment;knowledge, skills and user understanding; andorganizational structures and data governance. Somefac-tors appeared to both promote and hinder data quality, depending on how they were used and in which context. The paper contributes to CSCW by showing how data qualityin EHRs is connected to everyday documentation practices, system design, work conditions, and organizationalre-sponsibilities in hospital settings.
