Examines bilayer tablet performance in drug release, suggesting enhanced efficacy.
Abstract:The present study was aimed at the development and characterization of a bilayer tablet of diclofenac sodium for optimized drugdelivery. The formulation was designed to provide an immediate release (IR) layer for rapid onset of action and a sustained release(SR) layer for prolonged therapeutic effect. Bilayer tablets were prepared by the direct compression method using suitable excipientsand polymers. The prepared tablets were evaluated for pre-compression parameters, physical characteristics, hardness, friability, drug content uniformity, and in vitro drug release studies. The IR layer showed 98.13% drug release within 30 minutes, indicatingprompt drug availability, while the SR layer exhibited 97.28% drug release over an extended duration, demonstrating effectivecontrolled release behavior. All evaluated parameters were found to be within acceptable limits, confirming good tablet integrityand uniformity. The results indicate that the developed bilayer tablet of diclofenac sodium is a promising approach for achievingoptimized drug delivery with improved therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance.
