Case series reveals the need for improved pediatric thromboprophylaxis guidelines in IBD to reduce VTE incidence.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with ~14-fold higher incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in comparison to the general pediatric population.Adult guidelines regarding thromboprophylaxis in patients with IBD are explicitly available. However, pediatric guidelines recommend thromboprophylaxis in children with acute severe ulcerative colitis (ASUC) with ≥1 (postpubertal) or two risk factors (prepubertal), while there is no recommendation for thromboprophylaxis for Crohn's disease (CD).In this interesting case series, the authors highlighted the varied spectrum of VTE in adolescents with IBD during flare and good response to anticoagulation. There is an urgent need for revisiting the pediatric guidelines for thromboprophylaxis in IBD to help minimize the incidence of VTE in at-risk individuals.4.
