Abstract-In recent years, there has been an increased demand to analyze women as a subject matter of study from a historical point of view and her role in various processes of development of humanlife. Therefore, for the development of the approach, while there is no dearth of new sources, which have been used less in traditional historiography, a radical change is required in theexisting sources, material and process. This is the reason why there is talk of determining the roleand place by re-analyzing the sources, making gender inequality the basis of looking at socialrelations, yet reviewing the stereotypical concept. In the Indian context, this task has beencomplex and controversial. While women were at the center since the 19th century as the subjectmatter of the civilizational mission along with the cultural invasion of the colonial rulers, theIndian reformers also gave prominence to the subject by connecting the women’s question withthe revival and reform of the society. But by their searching for the cultural model of idealfemininity in the past, the immediate need to write about women in history disappeared. Sincethe 20th century, a thinking among the women themselves about their inferiority and activeorganized efforts were made but it was not enough. Under these circumstances, Gandhiji gave anew dimension to this entire process by linking the issue of women’s liberation with the freedomstruggles. Many social statuses of women were also recognized through constitutional equality. The ongoing debate over the scope and nature of the women’s movement on post-independenceissues has brought the whole question back into focus since the 1970s.
