Abstract The insurance sector constitutes a critical component of India’s financial system by mobilizinglong-term savings, facilitating risk transfer, and enhancing economic resilience. In recentyears, significant regulatory reforms, digital distribution advancements, and productdiversification have shaped sectoral growth, yet empirical clarity regarding financialperformance, solvency stability, and macroeconomic responsiveness remains limited. Thisstudy empirically examines financial performance and solvency trends in the Indian insurancesector over the period 2015–2024 using descriptive and inferential statistical tools. Fourstructured datasets covering premium volumes, profitability, solvency margins, risk indicators,segment-wise profitability, and macroeconomic variables were analyzed. Pearson correlationand linear regression indicate a strong positive and statistically significant relationshipbetween total premium and net profit, confirming that scale expansion is a key determinant offinancial performance. One-way ANOVA tests reveal significant improvement in solvencymargins and underwriting efficiency over time, highlighting enhanced sectoral resilience.Independent samples t-tests further demonstrate that life insurers exhibit significantly higherprofitability than non-life insurers due to structural differences in product horizons andinvestment income behavior. Conversely, multiple regression results show thatmacroeconomic variables such as GDP growth, inflation, and interest rates do not significantlypredict insurance penetration, implying that structural and policy-driven factors dominatesectoral expansion in India. The study contributes to academic and policy discourse byintegrating performance, solvency, segmental, and macro-economic perspectives within aunified empirical framework. Findings provide actionable insights for regulators, insurers,analysts, and policymakers seeking to strengthen financial sustainability and inclusion withinthe Indian insurance ecosystem.
