This research explores identity changes among Japanese Brazilians during their return migration, revealing complexities in their ethnic identity.
From the 1990s onward, the phenomenon of ethnic return migration of Japanese Brazilians to Japan for work in the industrial sector began, in what is known as the dekassegui movement. The literature indicates that ethnic return migration tends to generate an identity crisis for these migrants, as upon arriving in their homeland they are often treated as foreigners. This research aims to rethink the identity changes involved in this migratory process, based on interviews and documents from ethnic media, highlighting the complexities of identity construction throughout subsequent migratory movements, such as their "return" to Brazil.
