Research Article probes molecular interactions of chaotropic and superchaotropic anions with water, suggesting unique hydration effects.
In Research Article e6630432, Werner M. Nau, Jonas Warneke, and co-workers used Raman hydration-shell spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations to probe the molecular-level interactions of conventional chaotropic anions such as perchlorate and hexafluorophosphate as well as superchaotropic borate cluster ions with water molecules in aqueous solution. Evidence for “dangling” O–H bonds around chaotropic and superchaotropic anions is obtained, and their vibrational frequencies are distinct from those of kosmotropic and hydrophobic solutes.
