Alder Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned todocument the findings of three evaluation trenches excavated in and around the site of Scone Palace Stable Block at Scone Palace, Scone, Perth & Kinross (Site code PE72). Evaluation trench 1 uncovered Pottery sherds, glass, brick and metal fragments were recovered from various deposits ranging from late medieval/post medieval artefacts in the lowest layers to 19th and 20th C in the overlying garden soils. Charcoal and degraded straw were also sampled. Evaluation trench 2 found the remains of a dung store marked on the 1810 plan, with a rubble wall to the NE and a flagstone topped curved platform adjacent to the stables to the SW. The structure included a cobbled floor and was found to be backfilled with building debris and multiple layers of ash, redeposited sandy loam, and rubble tipped from the stone platform. These layers all contained mixed artefacts including iron fixings, bottles, glazed pottery and plastic debris, and appear to all date from the later 20th C when they were redeposited from elsewhere as backfill for the structure. Evaluation trench 3 found no significant archaeological features or finds.
