Archaeological evaluation identifies post-medieval features before industrial development, suggesting protection needs.
Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) was commissioned by Stoford Developments via Avison Young to undertake a programme of archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at Burton Old Road, Lichfield, Staffordshire. The archaeological works are being carried out prior to the submission of a planning application for the development of employment/industrial premises on a site known as 'Liberty Park'. The evaluation works comprised the excavation of three 50m trenches across the area of proposed works, in order to inform the need for, and extent of, any required mitigation works that may be required to protect the archaeological resource from the impact of the development. Archaeological features identified comprised two similarly aligned ditches one of which was post-medieval in date, and the other was in close proximity to a line of three undated but identically aligned postholes. The ditches and posthole alignment are likely associated with a post-medieval field boundary present in an earlier evaluation of the area to the north-east of the current development (Jones and Chinnock 2014 ; Trench 4).
