Archaeological topographical survey of medieval cultivation earthworks. Surveyed to Ordnance Survey National Grid co-ordinates and orthometric heights recorded using GNSS RTK GPS. Digital photographic record. Historical research. In March 2025 an archaeological topographical survey was undertaken of medieval cultivation earthworks within an enclosed tract of grazing land on the southern periphery of the village of Sapcote, Leicestershire, prior to development. The purpose of the survey was twofold: to obtain an accurate measured record of a portion of earthworks that would be lost during the course of a development; and to gain better understanding of their overall historic context. The earthworks comprised medieval selions (cultivation ridges) in a reasonable state of preservation and a late post-medieval to modern farm track which appeared to be on top of a major baulk separating two medieval furlong fields. The historic context of the earthworks is considered from a combination sources: historical studies, historic mapping and LIDAR. The earthworks were surveyed to Ordnance Survey National Grid co-ordinates and orthometric heights using RTK Differential GNSS. The report provides a descriptive and illustrative and account of the earthworks, using computer-generated graphics (Digital Terrain Model views and a representative profile) supported by digital photography.
