Higher arterial stiffness in older CKD patients is linked to increased functional dependency.
Why the study?
Arterial stiffness is a hallmark of vascular aging that may link CKD to frailty and functional decline, motivating an evaluation of its associations with geriatric syndromes.
Is arterial stiffness associated with geriatric syndromes in older adults with chronic kidney disease?
Cross-Sectional (n=180)
Is arterial stiffness associated with geriatric syndromes in older adults with chronic kidney disease?
Arterial stiffness is elevated in older adults with advanced CKD and is associated with functional dependence, though largely driven by age and systolic blood pressure.
Arterial stiffness may flag dependency risk in older CKD adults; hypothesis-generating, requires prospective validation before practice implications.
Introduction Arterial stiffness, a hallmark of vascular aging. It may link chronic kidney disease (CKD) to frailty and functional decline. This study aimed to evaluate the associations between arterial stiffness and geriatric syndromes. Methods Individuals aged ≥ 60 years; 90 patients with stage 3b–5 CKD or receiving dialysis, and 90 age‐matched healthy controls were included. Arterial stiffness was assessed using Pulse Wave Velocity (aPWV). Geriatric assessments for frailty, malnutrition, depression, polypharmacy, and dependence in daily living were evaluated. Multivariable regression was used to identify possible predictors for arterial stiffness. Results aPWV was higher in the CKD group than in controls. Frailty, malnutrition, and depression were not associated with arterial stiffness in CKD patients. Arterial stiffness was significantly associated with increased dependency. However, age and systolic blood pressure seem to be major determinants for aPWV. Conclusion aPWV is elevated in older adults with CKD, and it may reflect functional dependence.

Ozen et al. (2026) conducted a cross-sectional in Chronic Kidney Disease (n=180). Chronic Kidney Disease vs. Age-matched healthy controls was evaluated on Arterial stiffness (aPWV) and its association with geriatric syndromes. Arterial stiffness was higher in older adults with CKD compared to controls and was significantly associated with increased functional dependency.
