Qualitative study identifies barriers to green credit access in SMEs, suggesting policy reforms for improvement.
Building a low-carbon economy require affordable green credit to help finance sustainable investments. While Morocco has committed to incorporating environmental sustainability via policy, firms, particularly small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), still experience barriers to accessing green credit from commercial banks. This study is concerned with these barriers in the context of information asymmetry, credit rationing, and green banking theory. Through qualitative interviews, the results show that barriers to the accessibility of green finance include informational barriers, risk aversion, and understated green banking modalities. This study exemplifies an urgent need for formalized disclosure policies, institutional-level risk-sharing or pooling, and systemic institutional-level reforms in order to advance sustainable finance in new markets.
