An archaeological watching brief monitoring and recording the excavation of all groundworks in relation to the erection of a single storey commercial building. A single excavation area was observed, excavated using a using a 360 tracked excavator with a toothed grading bucket following the methodology set out in the WSI. Given the limited space on-site, the area was excavated in strips, backfilling the previous strip with the material from the next. No archaeological significant remains were uncovered during the excavation of the groundworks. Natural substrate was not observed on-site, instead a large deposit of topsoil with significant modern disturbance and demolition material was encountered, sealing other similar deposits which showed evidence for potential levelling of dumping of material. All deposits encountered contained significant amounts of later post-medieval and modern material, including bricks, ceramics, metal, plastic and glass.
