Qualitative study identifies the role of gay lingua in education, suggesting its importance in fostering community.
This study explores the use and significance of gay lingua among Filipino college students, particularly its impact in educational settings. It is qualitative in nature and aims to identify common gay lingua terms, their meanings, and lexical functions. The researchers used a descriptive qualitative approach, employing purposive sampling and survey interviews across three college departments. Data were collected from\ 30 students and analyzed through transcription and thematic categorization. The results revealed 99 gay lingua terms classified as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, each serving unique social functions. Guided by Queer Linguistics Theory and Symbolic Interactionism, the study found that gay lingua fosters identity expression, humor, solidarity, and resistance against heteronormativity. It also highlighted the importance of language in building community and navigating social dynamics. The study recommends fostering inclusive and culturally responsive classrooms where linguistic diversity—such as gay lingua—is respected and integrated to support LGBTQ+ visibility and student engagement.
