Demonstrates improved energy estimates in quasilinear wave equations, indicating enhanced solution longevity.
In this paper, we use the modified energy method of Hunter, Ifrim, Tataru, and Wong to prove an improved quintic energy estimate for initial data small in H ˙ x 1 × L x 2 H^1_x × L^2_x for a wide class of quasilinear wave equations of Kirchhoff type. This allows us to make the first steps towards small data H x 5 / 4 × H x 1 / 4 H5/4_x × H1/4_x local well-posedness. In particular, we prove an enhanced lifespan for corresponding solutions depending only on the H ˙ x 5 / 4 × H ˙ x 1 / 4 H5/4_x × H1/4_x norm of the initial data as well as the existence of weak solutions for H x 5 / 4 × H x 1 / 4 H5/4_x × H1/4_x initial data, again small in H ˙ x 1 × L x 2 H^1_x × L^2_x
