Describes achievements and perceptions impacting career advancement among academic women accountants, highlighting the need for institutional support.
This study describes the incidence and accomplishments of academic women accountants at four-year colleges and universities in the United States, their perceptions of factors that affect their career advancement, and their career objectives. Data were gathered from published sources and through a mail questionnaire to which 446 women responded. These data serve as a benchmark against which future progress of academic women accountants can be measured. In addition, they provide information that should be helpful both to institutions trying to attract and retain women accounting faculty and to women planning and evaluating their career strategies.
