Preliminary evidence suggests gender communication differences impact women’s representation in accounting leadership roles.
The accounting profession continues to search for explanations to describe the Low percentage of representation of women in upper management. A potential explanation for this phenomenon exists in the educational psychology literature: gender differences in communication. Since the performance of accountants in the workplace is directly related to their educational experiences as students, the theory that women are excluded from communication in the classroom and the boardroom should be examined in the accounting environment. This study takes the first step in this analysis. The communication between students, and faculty and students is analyzed in this paper. The results are consistent with the underlying theory: Men receive more and better attention from their instructors.
