Synthesis of the bimetallic mixed-ligand complex shows two distinct crystal forms with different structures.
A bimetallic mixed-ligand complex compound [Cd(ε-C6H11NO)Hg(SCN)4]n was synthesized from an aqueous solution and studied by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. It was shown that the complex [Cd(ɛ-C6H11NO)Hg(SCN)4]n forms crystals of two polymorphs 1 and 2, which have the shape of prisms and more elongated thin needles. Crystals of phases 1 and 2 are monoclinic, the unit cell parameters are as follows: space group. P21/c, Z = 4, a = 10.4625(8) Å, b = 15.8513(19) Å, c = 11.3345(10) Å, β = 106.064(4)°, V = 1806.4(3) Å3 for 1; space group P21/n, Z = 4, a = 8.1692(3) Å, b = 17.7979(7) Å, c = 12.0486(4) Å, β = 91.439(1)°, V = 1751.3(1) Å3 for 2. The coordination environment of the Hg atoms consists of four S atoms of the thiocyanate ions, which serve as bridges between the Hg atoms and the [Cd2(ε-C6H11NO)2] moieties, forming a layered (1) or framework (2) structure.
