Examines the impact of unplanned factors on gaming intentions, suggesting implications for behavior understanding.
The theory of planned behaviour (TPB) is effective in explaining deliberate intentions and behaviours but less so for spontaneous actions. This study, using the dual process model, examines the impact of unplanned factors on TPB. Analysing 344 samples, we find that intentions in online gaming can be categorised into two types: the decision to play and the time spent playing, each influenced by different factors. Additionally, immersion in the game provides insight into the actual time spent playing, enriching the TPB framework. Finally, descriptive norms, or perceptions of others' behaviours, are crucial in shaping intentions to play online games. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating spontaneous factors into TPB for a comprehensive understanding of online gaming behaviour.
