SynopsisChild abuse is an important social issue i n Australia. A study was carried out to determine the effect of social factors on child abuse in the metropolitan area of Sydney. Child abuse statistics were obtained from the N.S.W. Department of Family and Consumer Services and the values showed a wide variation i n cases between 199 postcode areas. There was a strong correlation between child abuse and family poverty (family income below $15,000 per year) for all of the postcode areas in the metropolitan area of Sydney. The possible reason for this relationship and methods of alleviating child abuse are discussed.
