Artificial intelligence is becoming integrated into various aspects of daily life, including everyday communication. Guided by relevant human-computer interaction frameworks, this research used a U.S. nationally representative sample (N = 588) to examine casual social interactions between humans and chatbots. Results show that communication contingency is useful in determining perceptions of responsiveness, involvement, and communication satisfaction. Companionship moderated the association of communication contingency and involvement. Communication contingency is likely important to understanding everyday interactions between humans and chatbots.
