New pest Scirtothrips aurantii infests citrus trees in Sicily, highlighting the need for immediate control measures.
The South African citrus thrips, Scirtothrips aurantii Faure, 1929, has been recorded in Italy for the first time. This species was recently reported in Spain and Portugal. Its presence has been confirmed in the major citrus‐growing area of Catania province (Sicily), infesting citrus trees. S. aurantii is currently included in the EPPO A1 List of pests recommended for regulation as a quarantine pest. This species is polyphagous and considered to be highly damaging, especially to crops of Citrus spp., mango ( Mangifera indica ) and avocado ( Persea americana ). This paper also provides notes on morphology, biology and management of the pest. Given the significant economic importance of citrus and exotic fruits growing in Sicily, the discovery of this new pest needs prompt monitoring and control measures to limit its spread.
