Develops a 3D printed multiple unit particle system, indicating promising applications in personalized medicine.
This study aimed to develop a 3D printing process based on fused filament fabrication to manufacture a multiple unit particle system (MUPS) for peroral controlled drug delivery. The system is to be swallowed as a single object which quickly disintegrates upon contact with the fluid in the stomach thus releasing individual particles. The particles, composed of a non-dissolving pharmaceutical grade polymer and the drug metoprolol succinate, release the drug in a controlled manner and can be emptied from the stomach in fasted and in fed state. In this work, a 3D printed MUPS was developed, printed and characterized using various methods. The dosage form provides potential for use in individualized medicine as the dose and also the composition can be adapted according to the needs of the patient.
