Randomized trial examines how purpose influences personal fulfilment and leadership effectiveness, suggesting strategic benefits for organisations.
Purpose has increasingly emerged as one of the most significant determinants of personal fulfilment, leadership effectiveness and organisational sustainability in contemporary society. Individuals and organisations that operate with a clearly defined sense of purpose often demonstrate higher levels of motivation, resilience, commitment and performance than those driven primarily by short-term objectives or external rewards. Despite growing recognition of the importance of purpose, many leaders, employees and institutions continue to struggle with purpose identification, purpose alignment and purpose-driven decision-making. This paper examines the concept of purpose from personal, leadership and organisational perspectives. Drawing upon Purpose Theory, Self-Determination Theory, Transformational Leadership Theory and contemporary organisational behaviour literature, the paper explores how purpose influences individual wellbeing, employee engagement, leadership effectiveness and organisational performance. The paper further analyses the challenges associated with purpose discovery and implementation within modern organisations. The findings suggest that purpose serves as a strategic driver of sustainable performance by enhancing motivation, resilience, innovation and organisational commitment. The paper concludes that purpose-centred leadership and organisational cultures are essential for long-term success in increasingly complex and uncertain environments. Furthermore, the study proposes an integrated conceptual framework demonstrating how purpose serves as a foundational driver of personal fulfilment, leadership effectiveness and sustainable organisational transformation.
