Demonstrates enhanced azimuth scanning in phased arrays, indicating improved performance.
This paper presents a compact S‐band wing‐conformal phased array with wide bandwidth, wide‐angle azimuth scanning and a narrow elevation beam width. A bowtie antipodal dipole fed by a tapered parallel stripline eliminates complex baluns while achieving wideband operation and broad azimuth beam width. A wide‐angle matching stub (WAMS) on the ground plane reduces the degradation of active VSWR under large‐angle scanning. By integrating U‐shaped/rectangular directors and a frequency selective surface (FSS), the gain is boosted, the elevation beam width is compressed to 78° and the back lobe level is suppressed. A 1 × 12 linear array with element spacing of 0.31 (where is the wavelength at the lowest operating frequency) was fabricated and measured. Results demonstrated ±65° azimuth scanning coverage, 40.1% relative bandwidth free of grating lobes and gain fluctuation below 2.5 dB at key frequencies, verifying the proposed design.
