Pilot study investigates daily GVS effects on postural stability and arterial pressure response, highlighting potential benefits.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of daily galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) on postural stability and the arterial pressure (AP) response. Subsensory GVS was administered to six participants for 10 min/day over 7 consecutive days. Posturography and AP responses to postural changes were assessed before GVS and at 1 and 3 days post-GVS. With eyes closed, postural stability improved, and the AP response at the onset of head-up tilt was augmented significantly at both 1 and 3 days poststimulation, compared with baseline measurements. These preliminary findings suggest that 1 week of daily subsensory GVS may modulate postural stability and the AP response, particularly under eyes-closed conditions, with effects lasting for at least 3 days after stimulation. Further sham-controlled studies with larger sample sizes are required to confirm these findings.
