Investigates fatigue behavior and mechanical properties in aluminum alloys with GFRP coatings, indicating performance enhancements with increased layers.
This study investigated the mechanical properties and high-cycle fatigue behavior of Al 6061-T6 alloy samples and Al 6061-T6 alloy plates coated with two and four layers of woven glass fiber-reinforced polymers (GFRPs). Hence, Al, Al + 2Plies, and Al + 4Plies are fabricated and tested. The fatigue fracture behavior has been investigated by observing the fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The fatigue life of integrated Al 6061-T6 alloy and aluminum alloys coated with GFRP has been calculated with the Basquin relation and compared with the experimental life. Results showed that the ultimate stress, yield stress, and Young’s modulus of Al + 4 Plies are about 31.5%, 31.8%, and 9.1% higher than Al + 2 Plies samples, respectively. Also, the failure strain of Al + 4 plies is also 16% higher than Al + 2 plies. The fatigue behavior of Al + 4 plies is close to Al 6061-T6 while the fatigue behavior of Al + 2 plies is different from other samples and shows better fatigue properties. In the fatigue test of aluminum samples with GFRP coating, delamination occurred first, and immediately the GFRP layers failed.
