Quasi-experimental design investigates how controversial topics affect speaking skills in Iranian EFL learners, suggesting new teaching methods.
This study investigated the effects of controversial subjects and motivation on the speaking skills of Iranian EFL learners. Using a Quasi-experimental design, two groups—experimental and control—were assessed to determine how discussing controversial topics influenced speaking scores, and the role of motivation in this process was also examined. Data were collected through the Cambridge Placement Test, the Gardner Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (AMTB 2004) questionnaire, and speaking tests conducted before and after the intervention. Results indicated a significant relationship between the use of controversial subjects and improved speaking scores, suggesting that engaging students in open discussions enhanced their oral communicative abilities. However, motivation did not emerge as a significant predictor of speaking gains. This research underscored the need for further exploration in this area to enhance EFL teaching methodologies and promote students' personal and academic growth.
