Does the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) correlate with the severity of coronary artery disease in patients with acute myocardial infarction?
The FINDRISC score and its parameters correlate significantly with angiographic CAD severity (SYNTAX score) in patients with acute myocardial infarction, suggesting its potential utility for identifying high-risk patients.
Introduction: The Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) is of great significance for identifying patients with type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to validate the utility of FINDRISC of coronary arteries in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) and analyzed the association between FINDRISC and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor levels. Method: This observational analytical study included all MI patients with several risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). The FINDRISC score was calculated in all patients immediately before angiography. Coronary angiography was performed to determine the severity of CAD according to the SYNTAX score. Results: Of 155 patients, 56.8% patients were men and 43.2% were women. The mean age of all patients was 61.9±12.42 years. The mean waist circumference and age of all patients were 87.88±7.9 cm and 61.9±12.42 years, respectively. The patients with high severity of CAD (syntax>32) had a larger waist size and were older. Moreover, having a positive family history of diabetes (P32) had higher BMI (P<0.003). Conclusion: The results displayed a significant correlation between the FINDRISC score and its parameters and the severity of CAD according to the SYNTAX score. The FINDRISC score may be useful for identifying patients at high risk of coronary artery disease.
