Reveals the bioactive potential of Helichrysum arenarium extracts, suggesting therapeutic benefits.
Introduction: The extracts obtained from Helichrysum arenarium contain different bioactive substances which have potential application in medicine due to its bioactive properties. Objective: The objective of this research was to elucidate the potential of essential oils and extracts from these species as reservoirs for innovative and potentially beneficial medicinal compounds. Methods: The essential oil was isolated through hydrodistillation, and the oil extracts were obtained using two extraction methods, namely Ultrasound-assisted extraction and Soxhlet extraction. The isolated essential oil underwent analysis using a Hewlett Packard GC-MS spectrometry. Results: The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation was characterized by the predominance of sesquiterpenes (54%) and monoterpenes (24%). Other compounds were present in smaller amount, monoterpene oxides (0.5%), monoterpene alcohols (3.7%), monoterpene esters (7.9%), non-terpene compounds (2.8%), sesqiterpene alcoole (2.8%) and sesqiterpene ketone (4.3%). From the comparison of influential substances, it can be noted that a higher amount of substances α-longipinen and humulene is obtained with the ultrasound assisted extraction compared to the extract obtained from the Soxhlet extraction. Conclusion: The findings outlined in this paper affirm the intriguing diversity of chemical content in the essential oil of H. arenarium.
