Review highlights the engineering of light phenomena using dielectric moiré structures, suggesting new opportunities.
Moiré superlattices created by stacking periodic structures with a slight rotational or translational mismatch provide a powerful route to engineering emergent wave phenomena. Inspired by flatband physics in twisted bilayer graphene, the moiré paradigm has recently been extended to dielectric photonic platforms, giving rise to twisted bilayer photonic crystals and related metamaterials. Interlayer interference reshapes photonic band structures and enables new control over light confinement, radiation, and topology. Here, we review modeling methods, fabrication approaches, and emerging optical phenomena, and discuss opportunities for dielectric moiré photonic systems.
